The 26th congress of the International Association of Legal Protection Insurance, RIAD, took place on the 6th and 7th of October 2016 showcasing legal service innovations driven by digitalization and globalization. A specific focus at the event was on the global movement towards a sharing economy, both in theory and in practice. The event provided an exceptional opportunity for legal protection insurers and others who are active in the legal world, to investigate whether the sharing economy and digitalization offer new opportunities for providers of legal services in general and for legal protection insurers in particular and whether these trends will help achieve our common goal of greater access to justice.

Academics and innovators in the legal field and the broader sharing economy came together to explain their unique business models, discuss key traits and showcase how delegates can successfully make this work for their businesses and customers.

Jean-Nicolas Guillemette, General Manager, Uber Quebec underlines that the Sharing Economy has enabled many people to get better, or access in the first place, to goods and services which they otherwise would not have been able to afford or to obtain. He thinks that: "Technology has revolutionized the Sharing Economy and has been beneficial for customers and providers in many sectors which could include legal services."

Scott FerrauiolaAssociate General Counsel, IBM Watson Group will describe how legal protection insurers can leverage Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics. “More and more legal professionals are using analytics and AI tools to improve their efficiency and decision making. As these technologies continue to develop over the next decade, they will have a profound impact on the way legal organizations and judicial systems operate, and how legal services are delivered.”

Rob VromenCEO, Euromex NV, a firm believer in innovation and constantly striving to improve  the services his company delivers; comments “I think that our industry, along with all other providers of legal services, has to decide how and where to remain relevant to our customers. Not used to many changes in the past, we now face severe disruptions through new applications of existing digitalization and newly emerging Legal Techs. If we do not listen to the signs of the times now, tomorrow we will be on the verge of disappearing from the landscape”
