Session I. The Future for Alternative Transport Fuels in Europe

While electrification of the transport sector has been gaining all of the recent headlines, there remains a substantial constituency of alternative transport fuel sources that seek to make a potentially significant contribution to the driving out of carbon from the transport sector and broader economy. This session will analyse the latest prospects for these various alternative fuel types and look at how both international, EU and national level policies are determining their future. Are the EU and international limits and incentives regarding CO2 reductions fit for purpose? What will the impact of the fluctuating approaches to global climate change policy mean for markets for fuels? What do we expect the optimal alternative fuel combinations to be? What does the medium and longer-term future look like for petrol and diesel? Can the alternative fuels market offer a viable and competitive choice for consumers?

Session II. Delivering a backbone vehicle infrastructure for Europe

Despite the many associated technical, business and political challenges, electrification is now seen as the principle mechanism by which decarbonisation of the transport sector in Europe can be achieved. This has been given additional impetus in recent months with both France and the UK committing to the phasing out of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, while Norway has committed to an earlier date of 2025. In addition, many major vehicle manufacturers are moving towards the production of hybrid and electric only vehicles. These steps, in theory, should be transformational. But what are the challenges facing governments, industry and society to ensure this transition becomes a reality? Where is Europe when it comes to common standards and interoperability for the broad spectrum of electrification technologies that make up the necessary infrastructure? Can we expect the required energy from renewable sources in time to meet the expected demand? What role will energy storage play and what innovations are we seeing here? How can technology support intelligent energy management in this context to give support to greater efficiency in energy use?

Session IV. Data, Technology and Transport

Technology and data promise much in the drive towards an intelligent transport infrastructure, which alongside providing an improved in-vehicle experience, has the potential to deliver greater energy efficiency, reduce road congestion, improve road safety and lower carbon emissions. How will technology interact with the electrification and alternative fuel agendas? What will the commercial scale emergence of innovations such as AI and machine learning, mean to the development of new solutions? How will both freight and passenger transport evolve? With increasing urbanisation, is there the possibility that the rural dimension will be left behind? What are the current bottlenecks to the coherent deployment of intelligent transport systems in Europe? Are current and proposed policy initiatives relating to digital and mobility fit-for-purpose, for instance around data ownership? This session will work to deliver a clearer picture of the next steps required to deliver the data infrastructure to support the intelligent transport systems of the future.
