Keynote speeches and roundtable discussion
As the GDPR entered into force in May this year and will apply from May 2018, this session will address how all stakeholders can best prepare for the implementation of the new rules, during the two-year transitional period.
• What will the roles of the European Commission, Governments, and National DPAs be going forward, during the implementation period?
• What will the new European Data Protection Board mean for public and private organisations?
• How have organisations started to rethink their data protection policy in order to comply with the new rules and how has this impacted, if at all, on their abilities to innovate?
• What are the upcoming challenges for both private enterprises and public sector organisations?
• How will cooperation between DPAs be encouraged?
• To what extent will DPAs have the necessary tools and resources to stay informed of new developments in data technologies, and how can it be ensured that the GDPR rules will be enforced in a consistent manner across Europe?

PANEL 1 - Protecting Personal Data and Supporting Data Innovation: Striking the right balance
As stated in the Digital Single Market Strategy, sound data protection rules will increase trust in digital services, providing confidence in the way user’s personal data is collected, processed and used, which is crucial to allow data-driven innovation to flourish. Sectors such as e-commerce, digital advertising and the sharing economy, to only name a few, rely heavily on the processing of personal data, providing organisations with a thorough understanding of their users behaviours and preferences, and allowing them to offer more personalized and convenient solutions.
This session will discuss the extent to which consumers will be able to continue to benefit from data-driven and personalised solutions, and what if any compromises are necessary to facilitate this.

PANEL 3 - The New Data Protection and Privacy Framework – Facilitating international data flows
We live in increasingly networked societies, regardless of borders, where transfers of personal information between countries and markets plays a key role in the global economy. Therefore, the extent to which global data protection laws remain compatible with each other is crucial for data innovation, economical and societal benefits. This session will discuss the implications of the adoption of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement earlier this year for global businesses, and will debate the future of the ‘Adequacy Principle’ for third countries looking to demonstrate to the EU that they have appropriate safeguards for data protection. This discussion will be held in the context of ongoing global trade negotiations and following the vote of the UK to leave the EU earlier this year.
