Introduction to Methanol
Methanol is one of the largest chemical commodities worldwide. However, for many years the main driver behind the strong demand in growth for methanol is not from chemicals, but as an oil substitute.
Current examples from other developed and developing countries illustrates the relevance of methanol with respect to various EU policies and legislative challenges, in the areas of; renewable energy, low carbon fuels, air quality, energy efficiency and many more.

'Well' Session - Low Carbon Methanol Production
Now the dust has settled on the RED amendment and the ILUC debate, attention has to focus on the development of affordable advanced, non-crop based fuels. One such solution is producing renewable methanol from sustainable, non-food resources. Not only do these technologies have the potential to address societal and environmental challenges, they also offer an opportunity to improve energy security, create jobs and support the reindustrialisation of Europe.

'Wheel' Session - Methanol in Road Transportation
Methanol as a low carbon “shift” fuel has real potential to move toward a low carbon economy. It provides an alternative to ‘electrification' by using existing infrastructure and engine technology at a significantly lower cost to society, not only as a gasoline component, but also as a diesel substitute.
