Session 3: The social dimensions: skills, labour and entrepreneurship in Industry 4.0.

The enthusiasm for the digitalisation of Europe’s industrial and manufacturing sectors is tempered by the possibility of traditional manual occupations being replaced by automated processes. Academics and analysts are divided on what levels of job displacement to expect and in which specific sectors this might occur if at all. The conundrum of technological efficiency vs. increasing employment is not new, but one that must be understood if the full benefits of technological innovation are to be felt across society.

This session assessed the challenges and opportunities facing Europe as it seeks to tackle social exclusion and inequalities, as part of the Europe2020 Strategy, while addressing the potential that technological development and the integration of digital into the industrial and manufacturing sectors brings. Themes included the incentivisation and role of start-ups and individual endeavours; the quality of jobs and the distribution of human capital and wages; and education systems and skill sets needed for the future industry environment.
