Session 1: Innovative healthcare for the 21st century: Fostering a supportive framework for eHealth in Europe
The European Commission's second eHealth Action Plan 2012-2020 was adopted with the aim of ‘providing smarter, safer and patient-centred health services’. Now approaching the half-way point, this session asked what this second eHealth Action Plan has achieved so far in terms of ‘putting patients in the driving seat’ and what remains to be done. Looking beyond 2020 and in anticipation of further technological innovation, what should the priorities for the third eHealth Action plan be?
How are current and emerging health-related technologies, such as wearables, telemedicine and mHealth, impacting and empowering patients? From a jobs and growth perspective, what impact will wider eHealth adoption have in Europe? How best can innovation at the entrepreneur and SME level be encouraged and to what extent can the recently finalised ‘Code of Conduct’ on privacy serve as an effective guideline to support mHealth app developers?

Session 2: Harnessing the power of data innovation and cross-sector collaboration for health
Research is already demonstrating the advantages of integrating, sharing and using data in the health sector. Director General of DG Connect, Roberto Viola has stated that the employment of big data ‘will unlock a pool of valuable knowledge in an unprecedented way’. This session seeked to explore the potential to deliver the digital transformation of healthcare systems in Europe through data innovation, cross-sector and cross-border collaboration.
How is big data and emerging fields such as the IoT currently being harnessed and integrated into health sectors across Europe? Can data innovation drive more personalised approaches medicine? What are the barriers to utilising big data, particularly patient generated health data, across the health sector and how can these be overcome? How might upcoming initiatives around the free flow of data, data liability and quality, relate to health orientated data? What progress is being made to ensure security, interoperability and standardisation across industries?
Given the existing healthcare priorities in Europe, and using existing and emerging technologies, what potential is there for cross-sector, cross agency collaboration to alleviate the existing burdens on European healthcare systems? To what extent can collaboration across healthcare and beyond unlock innovation in health markets and generate economic growth? What are the obstacles, if any, to promoting collaboration and integration on health issues and how can these be overcome?
