Device security is paramount for an effective connected world and the correct measures and safeguards must be ensured to prevent unauthorized access to devices. With the unprecedented growth in connected devices it is important that all stakeholders work together to help achieve an efficient Internet of Things.

• What are the greatest concerns and emerging security risks associated with M2M communications and the Internet of Things?
• How do we adopt a risk-based approach and how do we mitigate those risks?
• Are the correct safeguards in place to prevent IoT and M2M viruses and other security threats?
• To what extent has existing coordination between industry players and policymakers proved successful? What additional work needs to be done by the different stakeholders?

North America is seen by many as the leading region to secure investment for emerging technologies, but in the current economic climate, competition for funding is often fierce, and companies seeking investments in the region and beyond are finding it increasingly difficult.

However, with increasing demand for both wireless and mobile broadband already creating a squeeze on the bandwidth that is available, new M2M technologies requiring interference and disturbance free spectrum are facing an uncertain future.

Breakout session 2: Governance and Standardization

Some experts argue that in order for the Internet of Things to fully take off, a set of global standards is required. It is argued that the harmonization of standards will enable interoperability between different M2M technologies and across national and international boundaries, addressing many issues currently faced by innovators and service providers.

Session 7: The role of Cloud Computing and other ‘Big Data’ technologies for IoT

IoT applications are dynamic and are sometimes comprised of large amounts of data. For objects and devices to communicate application-relevant information, this requires a complex communications network. However, increasing amounts of data are putting a significant strain on infrastructures. Cloud Computing in principle is elastic and can therefore enable IoT innovation by helping to address the complexity of connecting millions of objects and devices while helping to manage the data strain. It is therefore expected that the Internet of Things will be the biggest consumer of the ‘Cloud’ in the not too distant future.

• What will be the future interplay between Cloud Computing and the Internet of Things?
• How can the Cloud enable IoT innovation?
• What would be the economic benefits of utilising the ‘Cloud’?
