Despina Spanou

Despina Spanou

Director for Consumers, DG Justice and Consumers, European Commission

 

Despina Spanou is the Director for Consumers at the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers.

Ms. Spanou heads a department of six Units in charge of consumer law and policy including consumer markets, redress and enforcement, as well as consumers’ safety. Previously she served as Principal Adviser the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers and was responsible for reshaping the DG’s communication department and policy, but also overseeing two self-regulation bodies as chair of the Alcohol and Health Forum as well as the Platform for action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. She also represented the health and consumer portfolio as Sherpa at the High Level Forum for a Better Functioning Food Supply Chain.

Ms. Spanou was previously the Deputy Head of Cabinet for the European Commissioners for Health Mr. Kyprianou (2004-2008) and Mrs. Vassiliou (2008-2010). During her time at the Cabinet of Health and Consumers, she coordinated food chain issues, including the EU response to the avian flu crisis in 2006, and EU food trade relations with Russia. She also advised on public health policy files, including the first EU action against cancer.

Ms. Spanou started her career at the European Commission's Directorate General for Competition after having practised European competition law with the Brussels branch of a US law firm. She is a qualified lawyer and holds a Ph.D in European law from the University of Cambridge.

Philippe was elected RIAD President in September 2014.
He is the Director for International Development of JURIDICA France. Philippe joined JURIDICA at the beginning of 2014. He had started in 2005 with the AXA Group as Director of personal services for AXA Assistance and became Director for home insurance, personal services and legal protection of AXA Assistance on International level in 2008. Before joining JURIDICA he took care of launching the Department Great International Accounts of AXA Assistance.

Stefan Krawczyk

Stefan Krawczyk, a French national born in the Netherlands, is a civil, media and copyright law graduate from Leiden and Amsterdam Universities and former research fellow of the Munich Max-Planck-Institute for foreign and international industrial and intellectual property law.

In June 2009, Stefan Krawczyk joined Internet market place eBay, where he now heads eBay’s European Government Relations team, covering all of eBay’s interests, including e-commerce, mobile commerce, distribution and sales, application development and financial services. Stefan currently also serves as Vice Chair of the Committee on Information, Computer and Communications Policy (ICCP) of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD. Before joining eBay, Stefan first worked for over five years as trademark litigator and for almost 15 years as senior lobbyist for the international recording industry with a focus on IPR enforcement, licensing and industry organisation in the EU, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Detlef Fechtner studied politics, economics, history and European Studies in Frankfurt and Brussels. Following his graduation, he worked as a research associate at the Center for North American Studies in Frankfurt. After research in the US (Cornell, Harvard), South Africa and Ukraine amongst others and an internship at a consulting company, he started his journalistic career as a business editor at the news agency vwd (now Dow Jones Germany). He then moved to the Frankfurter Rundschau, later to the WAZ Media Group and finally to the Börsen-Zeitung, for which he has been reporting from Brussels for the past four years.

Zbynek Loebl

Zbynek Loebl is a founder and CEO of Youstice, as well as a legal specialist in the law of internet, electronic communications, electronic commerce, technology law, data protection, intellectual property law, and general commercial matters.

Zbynek has initiated or co-initiated a number of initiatives on cross-border Online Dispute Resolution, including the concept of the ODR Exchange which was later renamed to Youstice. He has been also active in the UNCITRAL member of the Czech delegation.

In addition, Zbynek was a member of Rowan Legal, where he specialized in advising clients in technology-related projects. Until the end of 2007, Zbynek was Partner and then Managing Partner of CEAG (www.ceag.biz). Zbynek has also been an active member of IP Constituency of ICANN.

Zbynek Loebl is the only lawyer from Central and Eastern Europe participating from the beginning in IT Law Europe, a loose association of European law firms with strong technology practices.

In 2012, he founded Youstice as a globally available tool for efficient handling shopping issues.

Adam takes care of our Operations and Client Satisfaction, plus participates in designing the Youstice application. He has more than five years of experience in customer care and user experience. In the past, had also spent almost two years as Junior Consultant, providing consulting services for both new and established businesses.

Emmanuel Mouclier

Emmanuel Mouclier started at IBM as a sales engineer and developed his career in software and IT. His background and experience has unfolded in a multinational background and he highly prizes the international and multicultural environment that is part of the DNA of Youstice.

For the last 15 years, he has focused his energy on developing market footprint for innovative and disruptive technologies. He has managed business development of start-ups in the fields of natural language and artificial intelligence, applied to customer relationship management. He is experienced in both bootstrapping products and processes in start-ups, as well as in managing corporate business through direct and partners channels.

His approach is not focused on the technology, but on the value that the technology brings to the users. The questions he tries to answer are: how does the Youstice value offer help buyers and sellers to better solve their issues? How can Youstice contribute to facilitate their everyday life and business? At the end of the day, that is what innovation is meant for.

Karin Kuchelmeister

Project Officer, Stiftung Warentest

 

Karin Kuchelmeister has been working for the Foundation for Comparative Product Testing (Stiftung Warentest), one of the leading consumer protection bodies in German, since 2004. As Project Officer she is responsible for the evaluation and comparison, as well as the publication, of the results of surveys on financial services. Her field of expertise also includes legal protection insurance.

Mrs. Kuchelmeister looks back on a long-time experience in the field of financial services and consumer protection. She coupled both fields of expertise and worked for the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, where she discussed for instance the standardisation of consumer information for financial services, and held posts with prestigious institutions, such as the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband – vzbv) and the Consumer Centre North Rhine-Westphalia (Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen).

Karin Kuchelmeister has a Masters degree in Economics and Budgetary Matters (Diplom-Haushaltsökonomin) from the Hohenheim University in Stuttgart.

Graham Ross

Graham Ross

Mediator and Consultant in Technology and Dispute Resolution, Modria

 

Graham is a UK lawyer and mediator with over 20 years experience in IT and the law. He is a member of the 12 strong ODR Advisory Group appointed by the UK Civil Justice Council (https://www.judiciary.gov.uk/reviews/online-dispute-resolution/) to advise on the role of ODR in a modernised civil justice system and he is also Head of the European Advisory Board for a Silicon Valley spin-off from eBay and PayPal called Modria Inc (www.modria.com) one of the leaders in applying online technology to all forms of resolving complaints and disputes.

Graham is the author of legal application software (accounts and time recording) and the founder of LAWTEL, the popular web-based legal information update service. Graham co-founded the first ODR service in the UK, WeCanSettle, and designed the blind bidding software at the heart of the system. Graham subsequently founded TheMediationRoom.com, for whom he designed their online mediation platform. Graham speaks regularly at international conferences on the impact of the law on the Internet and e-commerce and on the application of technology to ADR. Graham was host of the 5th International Conference on Online Dispute Resolution held in Liverpool, UK, in 2007. Graham is also a leading trainer in ODR having created the accredited distance training course in ODR provided by TheMediationRoom to mediators in over 15 countries.

Grégory Jemine

Grégory Jemine

Generation Y, University of Liège

 

Grégory recently graduated from the University of Liège with a Masters in Human Resources Management. In extending his internship with Axa Belgium and his thesis on the New Way of Working (NWOW), he is currently developing a doctoral project on new ways of working in organisations. Grégory is also interested in the role of digital technologies in society, e-learning and Generation Y.

As a student job Grégory has supported various PhD students in their research, including working in partnership with the Centre for Social Economics (CES) and the Panel for Family Demography.

Pablo Cortés

Senior Lecturer, University of Leicester

 

Dr Pablo Cortés is a Senior Lecturer at University of Leicester’s School of Law where he conducts research in the field of consumer law, civil procedure, ADR and ODR. Pablo is currently on research leave (2014/16) while completing two projects: a European grant to research on online mediation and a Nuffield grant to evaluate consumer ADR schemes in the EU, which findings will appear in his second monograph: The Law of Consumer Redress in an Evolving Digital Market (Cambridge University Press, 2016). He has advised the European Commission during the drafting of the ODR Regulation and ADR Directive and has been invited to write reports and to participate in expert meetings by the UNCITRAL Working Group-III (ODR), the European Commission Directorate-General for Health & Consumers (DG SANCO) and Justice (DG JUST) as well as by the European Parliament Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) and the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI). Pablo serves on the advisory board of NeutralNet and Youstice.

He is a fellow of the National Centre for Technology and Dispute Resolutions (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and in 2012 he was a Gould Research Fellow at Stanford University. He is also a member of the Online Dispute Resolution Taskforce of the International Mediation Institute and a member of the Online Dispute Resolution Advisory Group of the Civil Justice Council in England and Wales.

Pat Monks

(PAT) Gerald Patrick Monks is the past president of the Group Legal Services Association 2014 (GLSA, formerly known as the American Prepaid Legal Services Institute). He served on the board from 2009 until 2015. Pat is a native of Houston, Texas, and practicing attorney for the past 31 years. He specializes in criminal and transportation law and works extensively with legal plans throughout the State of Texas. He is also the current president of the Municipal Justice Bar Association of Texas. Pat testifies in Austin before the State Legislature on Criminal and Transportation matters on a regular basis. He and his brother are corporate counsel to Lexington Notational Insurance Company of Baltimore, Maryland.

Pat graduated college at the University of Houston '81, and South Texas College of Law '84. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, and licensed for both the Northern and Southern Districts of Texas for the U.S. Federal Courts. Pat has tried over 1000 trials with 300 jury trials in Texas courts and he has successfully appealed many cases to the Texas appellate courts over his practice. He and his brother Mike, serve as prosecutors of the City of South Side Place, Texas. Pat is active in Politics and has served as a precinct chair and election judge of precinct 718 of Harris County for 20 years. Pat also serves on the board of the Texas Coalition to abolish the Death Penalty and he works closely with the Conservatives Concerned about the Death Penalty throughout the U.S. Pat also serves on the board of his local Theatre and participates whenever called on to help.
