Platforms: How is data innovation shaping the future of ecommerce?

This session will discuss fundamental considerations for the future of e-commerce platforms and the e-retail sector.

As digital innovation will continue to play a crucial role for the future of ecommerce, how can it be ensured that the policy landscape supporting European ecommerce businesses, including SMEs, remains consistent with emerging digital trends?

- To what extent is the development of data-driven ecommerce solutions, new business models and innovative Internet platforms supported in Europe?

- With new digital technologies facilitating users’ online experiences, how can ecommerce platforms meet the demands of increasingly tech-savvy consumers who shop through multiple channels? How are the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality changing customer experiences from product personalisation offers to virtual shopping experiences through innovative platforms? As it is expected that connected machines and objects will commonly be making purchases on our behalf, how will consumer behaviour change towards shopping? What new devices and platforms will be available to retailers and shoppers in this context?

- Are the privacy implications of technological developments such as m-commerce, data localisation, predictive analysis and behavioural advertising appropriately addressed to encourage innovation?

- How are internet platforms, retailers and brands working together on issues related to selective distribution, IPR enforcement, legality of the content and products distributed on online marketplaces, or the safety of their services?

- Have issues related to territorial restrictions towards access of goods and services including discriminatory offers based on a consumer’s location and the full portability of legally acquired digital content been appropriately addressed in Europe?
